INTERVIEW

Where did the idea come from ? Who are the project holders ?

The idea has come from a semester project when I was attending Master course on Graphic Design and I had to express “Greekness “ on Design, so until now I study on local communities and I design souvenir for them.

The project holder is Marievi Mastoraki. She worked in cultural sector mainly in exhibitions of visual arts, her studies was in Art History, in Graphic Design and Folkloristics.

What do they do ? What’s the project about ?

Mast design is a start-up company that aspires to promote each region’s cultural heritage through the art of design. Collaborating with professionals from human studies and designers, Mast Design attempts to provide products and services, as they will emerge from field participatory research of ethnological groups. Until today, the company works on designing souvenirs, such as scarves, tote-bags, cushions etc. that derive from folkloric research aiming to showcase the most important traits of each focus group as well as the elements of their material and immaterial civilization.

Why did they create it ? What kind of impact (social, artistic, innovative,) does the project have?

My purpose is to show off local cultural heritage and expressions through Design. Thus, the impact is mainly artistic but our products will distribute to local souvenir shops so would like to contribute to local economies.

How does the SMATH Project help them? What are the next steps?

Undoubtedly, SMATH this project, the idea was shaped clearly and our advisor gave us many ideas and explanations about market. Generally, seminars were very informative and useful. Our next steps are on promotion of the brand, and to communicate with more and more people.
