Caravan Creative Lab
INTERVIEW
Where did the idea come from ? Who are the project holders ?
My name is Mandy Laschou, I’m an Art Director and the holder of the project. The main goal in my work is to create spaces that invite the viewer to an interactive experience with the space and encourage him/her to explore his feelings. The Caravan Lab was built on this idea, that both artists and the public are invited to explore culture through an experience.
In one of my projects, I found myself struggling to find visual artist in a remote place for an art intervention. After a long research I found out that this place was full of musicians but lacks visual artists. I then realize that a combination of these two different types of artist could bring an amazing and innovative result of storytelling. At this point the project couldn’t support this kind of art but the idea of an art lab was already there!
What a collaboration between a dancer and a sculptor could bring? What could they create? And how could they present the culture of a place? Caravan Lab aims to bring together artists from different field and through experimentation to highlight the cultural heritage of a place.
Its mission is to regain the collective memory around culture and contribute to the creation of the country’s modern cultural identity.

What do they do ? What’s the project about ?
Caravan Creative Lab is an arts and culture platform that aims to artistically form spaces. It’s a caravan that moves from place to place aiming to research the different cultural characteristics that each place presents and then upgrade them through artistic interventions. CCL aspires to be the driving force for artistic creation and spaces’ reformation with history and personality. At the same time, it aims to showcase artists and artistic groups by presenting group exhibitions and hosting music events, theatrical plays and performances. CCL asks from collaborating artists to create a visual artwork inspired by the host space.
Why did they create it ? What kind of impact (social, artistic, innovative,) does the project have?
Greece has a rich cultural heritage and even its remote places have an amazing history and a great story to tell. Our mission is to regain the collective memory around culture through art and introduce both to tourists and locals all these hidden treasures of this country. Caravan Lab is on its way to explore new places and create great experiences for its visitors. Our vision is to promote Greece’s culture and art and contribute to the creation of the country’s modern cultural identity.
Caravan Lab is an innovative idea, not only of its ability to move to the most remote places but also for the way of approaching culture through experimentation. CL aims to create great experiences and highlight Culture and Art of different places of Greece. Promote new artists and their creation and to introduce them to markets abroad. We aspire to explore Greece piece by piece!

How does the SMATH Project help them? What are the next steps?
SMATH Project and INNOVATHENS Business Accelerator was a helpful tool. They helped me turn my creative idea into a business plan, be aware of the threads and prepare for it, recognize opportunities. I’m also really thankful for my personal progress, I certainly gain some great skills through this experience.
The next step for me is to create the team that will lead this idea to success and plan the first projects. I’m already planning Caravan Lab’s visit in a remote place, where the experience will be amazing for everyone that will be part of this project.
